“The End of the Universe”


            I saw it you know. The end of the universe. Well, if by “end” you actually mean “prologue, beginning, middle, end, epilogue, prequel, sequel, and everything,” then yes. I saw the end of the universe. Some people say that’s what caused me to go crazy. But what do I care what they say? I saw the end of the universe—a feat which no one else in the universe has done.
            Would you like to know what it was like? It was a giant waterfall cascading carelessly into nothingness. But in that nothingness there was everything. That’s what I saw. I saw everything. I knew that’s what I would see. Everyone laughed at me of course. They said the end of the universe wouldn’t look like that. They didn’t know what it would look like, but surely it wouldn’t look like that. But I was right. I need not tell them “I told you so.” I knew I was right because I saw it long before I laid eyes on it.
            I don’t remember the exact time or place. The answer just came to me. Perhaps it had never left. Perhaps it was there all along, I was just too afraid to look. That’s the irony of fear. Without fear, what is left but . . . everything? I suppose I can understand why I used to fear everything. I feared knowing what I already knew. I feared understanding what I already understood. I feared seeing what I already saw.
            I saw it you know. I saw it and lived to tell the tale. I saw the magnificence, the beauty, the sweet abyss of existence without fear. They say the more intelligent you are, the more you have to fear. I say the more intelligent you are the higher chance you have of discovering there is nothing to fear. Not even fear itself.
            I saw it you know. The end of the universe. I saw it.  I lived it. I am it. What will you see when you find the end of the universe? Me. I’ll be there. Waiting.
